CHAPTER TWELVE

Lewis reached his sister and knew something was different straightaway.

“You go on ahead a bit,” he said to Alex. “I’ll be there in a minute.”

Alex didn’t argue; he probably sensed Lewis wanted to talk to his sister alone. Alex had empathy—that was another tick in the plus column. He walked off a little way and sat on another boulder thrown down by nature, looking all kinds of cold and smiley.

Lewis ignored how gorgeous Alex looked, peering out of the big hood he’d pulled up over his spiky hair. “You told Greg.”

“I did,” Sorcha said the words with a smile, visibly vibrating with emotion.

“Did he ask you to marry him?”

It’s what he would have done if any of his short relationships had ended up with a baby.

She nodded. “Of course, he did, but I said we should wait. He loves me, and a baby… well, that just makes everything too intense.”

“You love him, though.”

“But I can’t pin him here, not like Ma did with Dad.”

Lewis pulled his sister in for a hug. She settled into a familiar position, her cheek on his chest and gripping his arms. Whenever she needed her big brother, Lewis felt twenty feet tall, as if he could be the one to solve all her problems. He considered what she said and saw the fundamental flaw in the whole thing.

“One thing, though. Greg is as much a part of this island as you are. He’s not like Dad. He was born here, and he’ll likely live here forever. The rhythms and seasons of Stoirmeil define his life more than any man I know.”

She snuggled into his hold. “I know,” she murmured.

“But it’s all too much right now. You only just came to terms with loving the man. You’re carrying his baby, and you need some time.”

“I said the same thing, as well as the whole parents’ story.”

“Then I’ll be coming home for a wedding, and a christening.”

One final hug and they separated, and Lewis turned to face Alex.

Alex was gone.

In an instant, all Lewis’s training kicked in. He’d taken his eyes off Alex for too long. He sprinted to the top of the hill, his heart in his throat.

Nowhere. No sign of Alex.

“Alex!” he shouted, even though protocol should have him searching quietly. But this was Alex, and it was Lewis’s goddamned island, and he’d shout if he needed to.

He looked down the path. Not there.

Alex couldn’t be that far ahead. Lewis had seen how much of the path Alex could cover, and it wasn’t far enough to be out of sight, which meant he had to have gone up the hill.

Gaining purchase on the slippery gravel, Lewis ran up and over the top of the hill, coming to a shocked halt at what he saw.

Alex chatting to the two naturalists with notebooks and binoculars.

Lewis stalked up to him, standing just behind and to one side. He’d let his attention wander and look what had happened; he’d fucked up.

The man and woman with Alex looked at Lewis expectantly.
